Like collagen, elastin is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is relevant in the ageing process. You may have heard it being talked about (especially in the skincare advertisements) but what exactly is it and how does your body’s natural ageing process affect elastin? At the Dr. Nima Clinic, we have treatments that can help to trigger natural elastin production. If you’re thinking of booking an appointment but want to know more about elastin, we’ve put together this article to explain exactly what it is and why it’s so beneficial for your skin!

Elastin – what is it?
As we mentioned above, this is a substance that your body produces naturally. It is a protein, like collagen, that is found throughout the body – adding elasticity and resilience to your arteries, lungs, tendons, skin and ligaments. It is particularly important in the skin as this protein is what helps our skin to stretch and then fall back into position.

Why is it so important when it comes to skincare?
Elastin is important when it comes to our appearance. Why? Well, its very purpose is to allow our skin tissue to stretch and then rebound back into position. The elastin molecules are designed to be stretchy and flexible, just like a rubber band. This process happens every day, whether it’s when you smile, frown or laugh. Unfortunately the ageing process can affect the amount of elastin that we produce in our bodies. The elastin molecules become worn down and damaged as we age, due to natural wear and tear. This means that our skin loses its elasticity, struggling to bounce back into position. As a result, this causes the formation of fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.

What treatments can help?

What is capsicum?
Capsicum is actually another name for a ‘chilli pepper.’ In the scientific world, it particularly refers to the type of flowering plants in the nightshade family Solanaceae. These chilli plants produce seeds that are hot to the taste and are often used in cooking as well as in lip plumping products. This is because they contain a natural chemical called capsaicin, which causes a tingling sensation when applied to the lips.

How does capsicum work in lip plumping products?

1. Numbing Cream
Dr. Nima begins by applying a numbing cream to the lips. This works to make the quick treatment as comfortable as possible, with the idea being that you can’t feel the needle of dermal filler at work. With this, the Dr. Nima Clinic makes sure to make all of your tweakments are comfortable with the use of effective numbing creams like this.

2. Appointments
Lip fillers usually only take one appointment to complete. Dr. Nima uses his careful and artistic touch to ensure natural-looking results during this time – leaving you with a perfect pair of lips. After your lip filler has settled fully, you can choose to have a follow-up appointment to ensure you are fully happy and satisfied with your lip fillers.

3. Juvéderm
He also only uses the industry-leading Juvéderm brand of lip fillers. These can only be sold to qualified medical professionals. This is important because it means that not only is the quality of the dermal filler among the highest in the world; it is also being administered in the correct way by a practitioner who is knowledgeable of human anatomy and side effects.

4. Amounts
Lip fillers are available in both 0.5ml and 1ml amounts – depending on the aesthetic you are looking to achieve.
